Liposuction

Question:
I'm a fit 38-year-old, yet can't seem to budge the weight around my thighs, no matter what exercise I do. I'm considering having liposuction on my thighs and buttocks. What are the dangers of liposuction, and are there possible side affects?

Answer:
Liposuction has advanced enormously over the past few years. Modern liposuction is not only an extremely safe procedure, but is also associated with significantly less bruising and discomfort than older techniques.

Unfortunately, sensational media reporting has distorted the safety of this procedure and has instilled unnecessary fear.

Every operation carries a degree of risk, and liposuction is no exception. However, complications are usually associated with the quality of the result: for example, unevenness. Life-threatening complications are extremely rare.

To help minimise any possible risks, it is important to choose a doctor who is well trained in liposuction, performs it regularly and uses modern techniques. People with health conditions such as severe diabetes, heart disease, liver or kidney disease are usually not suitable for liposuction.

A consultation with your cosmetic surgeon is the best way to establish your likely improvement from liposuction and your level of risk. Good luck.
